Bill Simmons wrote a great article today about David Ortiz’s recent “struggles”, which got me thinking…
I was a Pedro guy, somewhat of a Manny guy but definitely and Ortiz guy. If this is really it for Big Papi the who is my favorite Sox player?
I love Pap but am pretty sure he’s going to bolt for the big money so I’m trying not to get too attached… so then who?
Stay with me now…
I turned the corner on Ortiz when he went o-7 on 05/14/09 against the Angels, leaving a dozen runners on base. I watched a four hour and seven minute sox game that they ended up losing by one run and Papi left 12 men on base.
At some point during the game they talked to Papelbon, and asked him who the toughest member of the Red Sox was? Pap’s response:
“The Canuck, my man Jay Bay”
In hindsight this moment could not have seen more scripted…
Speaking of scripted, Kristin Cavallari shows up out of nowhere and catches Heidi Pratt’s bouquet. Then Heidi turns to her and says “you’re next” as Lauren Conrad gets into a town car and drives away?!?
IT’S F*CKING FAKER THAN WRESTLING!!!! I FEEL LIKE I’M TAKING CRAZY PILLS!!!
My wife is touched by it all though, even when we are watching “I’m a Celebrity get me outta here!” and Spencer turns to Heidi and says “this is the first time you’ve cried on tv and it isn’t fake”. Then my wife proceeds to give me the same look I gave my mother when she said there was no Santa.
And she calls Survivorman fake?!? Ugh….
But anyway… so Pap answers that JayBay is the toughest guy on the team…
Really, I thought? Not Yoouuuk, Pedroia or Beckett? Then I remembered, JayBay is a beast! He hits BOMBS and in super clutch spots.
If your a die hard Red Sox fan you know this already, for the uninformed… JayBay is heading for BigPapi like cult status in this town.
Don’t get me wrong I’m not selling my Ortiz jersey just yet buy my man JayBay might be making his way into the wardrobe soon.

Jay Bay is the next Sox legend IF he doesn’t skip town for big bucks too!
And Survivorman is not fake! Geesh! The guy brings three cameras with him into the woods, unlike that Bear dude who has a cameraman or Will Ferrell with him for help! Admittedly, that was a good episode, watched it the other night.
